Martin Scorsese - His great movies - Entertainment - Movies

Martin Scorsese has been acknowledged as the greatest American filmmaker of his generation. The evidence of this critical acclaim is abundant: Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976) and Raging Bull (1980) are all listed amongst the 360 Great Films as selected by Sight and Sound and the British Film Institute. Martin Scorsese, the one-time enfant terrible of American cinema, now past fifty, is regarded by many film critics and film historians as our greatest living Director. From Mean Streets (1973) the deeply autobiographical movie that first brought him substantial notice, to the movie KUNDUN (1998) Scorsese has successfully managed, like perhaps no other American filmmaker, to make artistic, personal films within the Hollywood Studio systems.

Scorsese began his film making career at New York University. His first feature, Who's That Knocking at My Door? (1969), was a student film that eventually received a limited release and some favorable critical notices. Scorsese's first major critical success comes with his next film, Mean Streets and even today it is considered as one of the best movies till now and even all the great directors of Hollywood agrees to the fact the it was his Master piece. Mean Streets is a major part of early 1970s American film.

In 1974, Scorsese directed 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore' which earned Ellen Burstyn a Best Actress Academy Award. In 1976, Scorsese directed the film for which he is probably most famous for, the ultra-violent Taxi Driver which drew controversy after it inspired John Hinckley's assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981. Another most popular movie of M. Scorsese was Raging Bull. This film was an amazing, black and white biography of middleweight fighter Jake LaMotta which earned two Academy Awards. It was also credited as the best film of the decade by the well known critics of Hollywood.

The next movie, which was his fifth collaboration movie with Robert De Niro was 'King of comedy' which brought him huge fame. "The King of Comedy" is the best satire in his movies about the vapidness of society's values and the public's obsession with celebrity. It has its share of funny moments but the overall effect is deadening. He did not just made best debate movies, but also proved his talent by giving a musical movie to the world 'New York'. What is fantastic and wonderful about this film is the music, the sets and when Liza Minnelli sings. "The Color Of Money" is a character driven story of a teacher's efforts to teach young student the importance of psychology and subtlety, en route to the big-time pool tournaments in Atlantic City. At a slightly deeper level, the film is the story of how the teacher, with his own personal agenda, uses the student as a means to an end.

The film Godfellas(1990) is a rush of energy, where all the elements come together brilliantly. Scorsese's use of music provides a strong template for the action. 'Cape fear' is a 1991 thriller movie directed by Scorsese which received academy award nominations for Best actor and Best supporting actress. Unfortunately, similarly powerful movies such as Casino (1995) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) have been mostly ignored, both critically and at the box office.
