Watching TV with the Red Chinese Movie 2011 Online Review - Entertainment - Movies

Three Chinese students, Tzu (James Chen), Wa (Keong Sim) and Chen (Leonardo Nam) come to study in America in the summer of 1980. They move into a New York City apartment next door to Dexter (Ryan O'Nan), a graduate student who introduces them to Suzanne (Gillian Jacobs), his occasional girlfriend and to Billy (Michael Esper), a struggling filmmaker. The Chinese find America fascinating. However, their perceptions, based on watching non-stop television, change when one of them is brutally mugged, when Suzanne takes up with Chen behind Dexter's back, and when Zap (Peter Scanavino), Suzanne's ex boyfriend, stalks them into a state of terror. When on December 8, 1980 John Lennon is murdered, the Chinese students decide to buy a gun for self-defense.Watch Watching TV with the Red Chinese Movie 2011 OnlineThree Chinese students in New York City find their preconceptions of life in America permanently shattered in this comedy drama from director Shimon Dotan (HOT HOUSE, DIAMOND D
OGS). It's the summer of 1980. Chen (Leonardo Nam), Tzu (James Chen), and Wa (Keong Sim) have just arrived in the country when they move into a crowded apartment building and meet their new neighbor -- a friendly graduate student named Dexter (Ryan O'Nan). Up to this point, Tzu, Wa, and Chen have learned everything they ever knew about life in the U.S. by watching endless hours of television. But shortly after meeting Dexter's sometimes-girlfriend Suzanne (Gillian Jacobs) and starving filmmaker Billy (Michael Esper), the newly arrived trio get a rude awakening in the form of a vicious mugging. Meanwhile, relationships get complicated when Suzanne comes on to Chen, and her ex-boyfriend Zap (Peter Scanavino) turns menacing. Convinced that something ominous looms on the horizon following the assassination of John Lennon, the unnerved trio decide that their only hope for personal safety in the city is to buy a handgun.

by Coby Beyer-Chafets : I had the pleasure of seeing this film early. The writing was solid, the acting was terrific all around, and the story was interesting.Although the budget for the film was tiny and resources were limited, the production on Watching TV With The Red Chinese was solid. At first, the film is nothing but a series of random events. The true genius hereis how the filmmakers perfectly tie everything together into aheartwarming, yet not sappy, story about race, love, loss, fate, andJohn Lennon. If you ever have the chance to see this amazing piece of cinema, Iwould highly recommend it.When Tzu, Wa and Chen come to New York City in the summer of 1980 to study, they find themselves in a strange land far, far away from life in communist China. Consuming a heavy daily diet of American T.V., they are captivated by the cacophonous culture surrounding them. They make friends with their next-door neighbor Dexter, his sometimes girlfriend Suzanne and the struggling filmm
aker Billy. They party. One falls dangerously in love. But a brutal mugging and an ex-boyfriend's crazed jealousy plunge them into a state of cultural confusion and fear. When, on December 8, 1980, John Lennon is murdered, the trio fatefully confronts the social violence that surrounds them.
